South Hampstead High School
Founded in 1876, South Hampstead High School located in north London has been recognised as one of the top academic girl’s schools in the country. A brand new school was needed on the same site to ensure the school was fit for the 21st century.
The result of this £20m re-development project is a modern school building that blends perfectly with the original existing structure, ensuring the long-term future of this excellent academic institution.
The designers made maximum use of natural lighting – huge roof lights allowing daylight to flood down through the floors. BA Systems were contracted to provide their B20 range of glass and stainless steel uprights with offset handrails and B40 frameless glass floor to ceiling balustrade on the staircase with stainless steel offset handrails. The effect is light and open spaces – perfectly suited to the school environment.
Project Achievements
This project presented many operational challenges which were successfully overcome – from the logistics of actually delivering material on to site from the busy local road network to the extensive coordination and project planning to actually get the large panels of glass into their final position for installation.
